Historical Mombasa

Mombasa is Kenya’s second largest city after Nairobi. Founded in the 16th century, Mombasa is located on the eastern coastline of Kenya bordering the Indian Ocean. From the early days of colonization and slavery in Africa, Mombasa has had its struggles to free itself from the hands of its enslavers; first the Portuguese, then the Arabs followed by the British. As a result, the present day Mombasa is a reflection of the past rich in diverse culture and full of interesting corners of history to discover. Elephant Tusks Monument

Along Moi Avenue in Mombasa are four huge Elephant Tusks placed in honour of the visit of Queen Elizabeth of England when she first visited the town during the colonial period. The Tusks are placed in a way that form an “M” shape which stands for Mombasa. This is a photographic must-see spot for any traveller visiting Mombasa. Proceed to the Hindu Temple.

Fort Jesus: Mombasa’s Old Town

Located in the Arab old town in Mombasa, Fort Jesus Museum was initially a fort built in 1591 to secure the safety of the Portuguese living on the East Coast of Africa. With its long history, fort Jesus is considered one of the most exceptional examples of 16th century Portuguese military fortifications in the world. A visit to the fort provides a fantastic introduction to the history of Mombasa and the wars that took place between the Muslim Arabs and the Christian Europeans for control of the region.
