Accessing Kenya Internationally

Internationally, Kenya can easily be accessed by air and therefore most visitors get into the country by plane. • Kenya Airways
  • British Airways
  • KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
  • Emirates Airlines
  • Qatar Airways
  • Saudi Arabian Airlines
  • SN Brussels Airline
  • Virgin Atlantic Airways LTD
  • Turkish Airlines
  • Swiss International Airlines and etc.

Main landing is in Nairobi at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Mombasa at Moi International Airport.

Getting Around by Air

While in Kenya on holiday or on a business trip, you may not have a lot of time though it’s most probably that you may need to travel from one town to the other which generally involves long distance. To move fast and save time, it is practical to book a local flight.

Kenya’s local and domestic airlines and companies include but not limited to the following:

  • AirKenya
  • Kenya Airways
  • Jet Link Express
  • Fly540
  • Fly-Sax and others

By Train

The Standard Gauge Railway, better known as the SGR or Madaraka Express is now a reality. This is a high speed train connecting Nairobi and Mombasa. It takes 4 hours to travel between the two cities which previously used to take more than 8 and 15 hours by bus and the old passenger train respectively. Willing to travel by high speed train from Nairobi to Mombasa or vice-versa? We will help you on that.

By Car

If you have to move around by car, buses connecting major towns are available. Taxis are also available especially in main cities and towns; however, the price must be negotiated or at least known before you get into the car. Majority of local people usually move around in a kind of mini-buses called matatus that operates on several routes.

Tuktuk, a three-wheel vehicle is also a popular means of transport. Although comfort is not their most outstanding feature, it can be a very nice and funny experience to jump on one.

  • Best time to go: June to October, January to February
  • High season:  July to November, January and February
  • Low season: March to May

Kenya’s Climate

Kenya experiences a pleasant tropical climate though there are notable variations as you go from one region of the country to another. Average temperatures range between 19° and 27°. It is warm and humid at the coast, temperate inlands and very dry in the north. Kenya experiences two rain seasons normally referred to as the “long and short rains.” Note that most nights and early mornings can be chilly and therefore advisable to pack some warm clothing with you.
